ESSAY WRITING GUIDE

Remember you are under severe time constraints. Time is your worst and largest enemy.

In the IELTS Exam you are given 40 minutes to write an Essay of a minimum 250 words on a particular topic.

In the TOEFL Exam you should write an Essay of minimum 300 words in 30 minutes.

Following some simple strategies to hold the Reader’s attention is important.

First you should read the Essay topic carefully, next, follow these 5 simple steps when writing an Essay.

STEP 1 – 1 minute

ANALYZE - Topic by underlining the main KEYWORDS. This helps you to focus on what you are should write about and address all the points systematically.

Step 2

STEP 2 – THINK (of what -?) IDEAS – Maximum 2/3 good ideas

Step 3

STEP 3 – PLAN YOUR ESSAY PARAGRAPHS

For Steps 2 & 3 - You have 9 minutes – Any combination you wish.

If you need more time to THINK then take extra time and less time to PLAN and vice-a-versa.

The PLAN consists of:-

Introduction - 4/5 lines – Introduce your topic and give your point of view in the opening paragraph. It may be a question requiring an argument as an answer in which case you will write yes/ no and present your view. For instance - Topic – Do you agree or disagree. In this case which ever stand you take you must support your argument.

In a second case it would be How far do you agree / disagree? OR To what extent do you agree / disagree? Here you will have to address both sides. In some cases you will be asked to give an account as an answer. Which means you will have to describe the situation and explore reasons for the situation. In this case you do not have to support the argument.

THE BODY

Your 2 /3 ideas in paragraphs, which should include you Supporting point in favour of / or against, if an argumentative essay or just a simple account of the situation and the reasons for the situation. Each idea in the Body of your Essay should be in a separate paragraph beginning with a topic sentence so as to link your ideas thus focusing on topic.

THE CONCLUSION

The conclusion should be 4/5 lines briefly summing up the essay and restating your view. The conclusion usually begins with a special phrase such as: In conclusion / to sum up, / to round off, / to conclude, / in summing up/ in closing. Please note your Introductory Statement should match your concluding statement, or else the entire Essay will be incorrect if you have a conflicting Opening and Closing Statement.

Step 4

STEP NO.4

WRITE THE ESSAY – You have 25 minutes – All this time we have been planning what to write.

The Essay should now be in the following format.

I. INTRODUCTION

A short introduction of one paragraph of about 4/5 lines addressing the topic and stating your view very clearly.

II BODY

A. Paragraph 1

Supporting Point No. 1 – (1 or 2 lines)

Evidence for Supporting Point No. 1: Analysis of example to show how it supports the topic sentence and thesis. (3 to 4 lines)

B. Paragraph 2

Supporting Point No. 2 – (1 or 2 lines)

Evidence for Supporting Point No. 2: Analysis of example to show how it supports the topic sentence and thesis. (3 to 4 lines)

C. Paragraph 3

Supporting Point No. 3

Evidence for supporting Point No.3: Analysis of example to show how it supports the topic sentence and thesis. (3 to 4 lines)

Conclusion: Should be about 4/5 lines summing up your Essay and matching the introductory statement.

Step 5

STEP NO. 5

REVISION - You have 5 very precious minutes.

The final and most crucial step is to revise all that you have written very quickly. Check punctuation, grammar, spellings, tenses etc.,(In case of quotes please use quotation marks.)

Do not write less than 250 words and not more than 270 words in case of IELTS

In the TOEFL every thing remains unchanged EXCEPT you have only 30 minutes to write and you must write a minimum of 300 words which means you have less time for your
5 STEPS accordingly.

A small hint here “PLEASE WRITE SIMPLE AND ACCURATELY RATHER THAN COMPLICATED AND INACCURATELY”.

DO NOT go off the point.

WRITE SHORT sentences rather than complicate yourself and your essay with lengthy sentences.

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR ESSAY WRITING.
