Since
its inception
in 1964,
the Test
of English
as a
Foreign
Language
(TOEFL) has
undergone
a series
of changes.
First
the Paper
Based
Test
was conducted
with
candidates
using
the pen
and paper
to do
to exam,
in the
three
principal
areas
of English
language
proficiency
i.e.
Listening
Comprehension,
Reading
Comprehension,
Structure & Written
Expression
Test
of Written
English
(Essay
) Writing.
The Test
was conducted
for a
period
of around
2 hours
excluding
time
for completion
of Forms
etc.
The candidate
was given
140 multiple
choice
questions.
You had
30- 40
minutes.
For Section
1 (Listening).
25 minutes
for Section
II (Reading)
& 55 minutes
to work
on Section
III (Writing).
Thereafter
the exam
has been
conducted
via a
Computer
Based
Test,
with
the same
modules
of Listening,
Reading
Structure & Written
Expression & Essay
Writing.
However
in late
2004
the Speaking
module
was added
to the
Examination
and taken
as a
separate
exam.
In
today’s
Internet
World,
The Internet
Based
TOEFL
exams have
been
introduced
all over
the world
in 2006.
With
a revised
Speaking
Module – a
face
to face
interview
and interactive
communication
test.
The
writing
section
comprises
of two
tasks
- writing,
based
on what
is read
and heard,
and supporting
an opinion
on a
topic.
The time
allotted
for this
is 50
minutes.
There
will
be no
grammar
section
in the
new format.
Grammar
will
be evaluated
in speaking
and writing
responses.
The
speaking section
will
now
have six tasks
where
the
students will
be
given two independent
tasks
to
express an opinion
on
a familiar
topic
and
four integrated
tasks
to
speak, based
on
what is read
and
heard. Up to
30
seconds will
be
given to prepare
the
response and one
minute
will
be
allotted to respond.
